Imagine stepping into a physics lesson where you’re not just reading about gravity—you’re feeling it, zooming through a 360° virtual world where atoms dance and planets spin. That’s no longer a daydream for students in Coimbatore, where the city corporation has just flipped the script on education with jaw-dropping Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (AR-VR) labs. Launched as a pilot in two schools at a cool Rs 70 lakh each, this isn’t just a tech upgrade—it’s a full-on learning revolution!

Initially, the plan was to roll out these futuristic labs in five schools, but for now, the spotlight’s on Sidhapudur Corporation Girls High School and SRP Ammaniammal Girls Higher Secondary School in RS Puram. The official ribbon-cutting’s slated for next week, but the buzz is already electric—trial classes at RS Puram had students and teachers raving. Picture this: eighth-graders strapped into VR headsets, diving deep into subjects like never before. Subiksha S, one of the lucky first-timers, couldn’t hold back her excitement: “It’s like we’re inside the lesson! Every tiny detail pops—physics and chemistry actually make sense now!”

And it’s not just the kids who are hooked. Teachers are calling it a game-changer. Sridevi B., a science teacher, grinned as she explained, “Forget flat PowerPoint slides—these kids are practically traveling through the topics. They zoom in, spin around, and get up close with a 360° view. Even the average learners are catching on fast—it’s less slog for us and more ‘aha!’ for them.” Headmaster K Ramesh is already predicting a score boost: “We’re talking at least a 30% jump in marks—this isn’t just learning; it’s experiencing.”

The mastermind behind this leap? Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran, who’s pumped to unleash over 3,000 educational modules into these labs. Right now, they’ve loaded up 1,100 syllabus-based models—500 for Classes 1-5, 500 for 6-10, and 100 for higher secondary. Need more? Teachers can request custom topics on the fly. “This isn’t static,” Prabhakaran said. “It’s about sparking curiosity—getting kids to explore, apply, and dream big. If the feedback and grades soar, we’ll push for labs in more schools.”

Each VR lab fits 22 students per session, and it’s not just a passive ride. After every mind-blowing module, students grab tablets for instant assessments—preloaded quizzes or on-the-spot tests, teacher’s choice. Scores flash up immediately for both student and teacher, turning learning into a live leaderboard. “It cuts distractions to zero,” Sridevi added. “They’re locked in, living the lesson.”

Coimbatore’s betting big on this pilot, and if it pays off, those dusty chalkboards might just become relics. This is education remixed—interactive, immersive, and downright fun. Who wouldn’t want to ace a test after surfing through a virtual solar system or dissecting a molecule in 3D? The future’s here, and it’s wearing VR goggles!
