India has become the top source of augmented reality (AR) lenses on Snapchat, with its AR developer community increasing by over 50% in the last two years, according to Snap Inc. Co-founder and CTO Bobby Murphy
Murphy highlighted the integral role of AR in daily life within the country and praised the innovation of Indian developers.

At the second annual India AR Day event in Mumbai, Snap Inc. showcased the transformative power of AR and its vision for the future, emphasizing creativity and a thriving ecosystem within India's developer landscape. Snap’s fifth-generation Spectacles were also presented at the event. These see-through AR glasses are powered by Snap OS and offer an immersive AR experience controlled by voice and hand gestures
According to Snap, India is the second-largest market for its AR developer community. The company has over 375,000 creators worldwide who have built more than 4 million AR lenses for Snapchat, with users engaging with them over 4.5 trillion times in the past year. Over 85% of Indian Snapchatters use lenses to connect with friends and family, especially during cultural events. Snapchat's AR lenses offer interactive and immersive experiences within the app.
Snap is also working with Indian educational institutions to foster talent in the mixed reality (MR) space and has organized "Lens Studio meet-ups" in various cities to train developers in building AR lenses.
